Cryopreservation of sperm

The in vitro fertilization laboratory within the Fertility Center offers services of cryopreservation of the semen, having all the necessary means to ensure over 80% viability after defrosting.

The sperm bank of the laboratory freezes and storages the sperm only to be used for the couple. Cryopreservation of the sperm can be required by the patients or done as an indication of the doctor.

Cryopreservation of sperm can be demanded by the patients or carried out at the doctors' prescription.

The most frequent situations in which one resorts to cryopreservation are related to the risks of diminished male reproductive capacity due to a medical treatment or the impossibilty of his physical presence when his partner follows a fertilization treatment.

In order to ensure a high sperm quality after the defrosting, the sperm is cryopreserved after a previous preparation, using specific procedures of sperm preparation sperm preparationand special cryoprotectants.

The samples of prepared sperm are loaded in labeled tubes with information regarding the patient data and are slowly frozen using a special frosting machine and liquid nitrogen. Once they are frozen, the labeled samples are kept in colored dewars, inside a thermo-isolated recipient, in liquid nitrogen, at -196 C until they are requested to be used in the couple fertilization techniques.

It is important to be known:

Cryopreservation is done only after the patient presents recent serological analyses, which prove the absence of HIV virus, HBs, HCV and VDRL from the blood.

Only in normozoospermia situations, eventually a slight deviation from it, an efficient storage of the sperm can be ensured.

In the sperm bank within the Fertility Center, sperm is prepared for cryopreservation only after the filling of a written agreement, signed by both partners, in which is specified the number of stored samples, the purpose of the cryopreservation and the trimestrial paying engagement of the cryopreservation services.
