Sperm preparation is a lab procedure to separate the viable, mobile and good quality spermatozoa from the seminal liquid, leukocytes and bacterial flora.
Only the prepared sperm can be used for intrauterine insemination(IUI), in vitro fertilization (IVF) or intra cytoplasmatic injection(ICSI).
The principle of preparation is based on the centrifugation of semen in special density gradient in order to select the spermatozoa, followed by washing them in an environment meant to enhance their fertility activity.
For IVF and ICSI, the previously two stages are followed by a swim-up and swim-down separation, based on the ability of oriented migration of good quality spermatozoa. This complex sperm preparation procedure allow us to obtain a maximum rate of oocytes fertilization and good quality embryos.
